Before we talk about how to reduce menstrual pain, let us briefly discuss the cause.

Excessive release of a hormone called Prostaglandin. Prostaglandins enable the uterus (womb) to contract and relax so that the inner layer of the uterus (the endometrium) can be shed and flow out of the body. Excessive production of prostaglandins will lead to more vigorous uterine contractions and cause pain.

Note – If your pain does not improve with all of the above, if you have very heavy flow or if notice new onset menstrual pain, see your doctor. Investigations to rule out secondary causes of painful menses will be carried out.
