ABNORMAL SKULL

Premature closure of the cranial suture (junction between bones of the skull) is the cause of abnormalities of skull development. This term is called CRANIOSYNOSTOSIS. The cause is unknown.

FORMS OF CRANIOSYNOSTOSIS

Boat shaped head caused by early closure of sagittal suture.

Plagiocephaly: Oblique or sloping skull. This is caused by early closure of Coronal suture on one side.

Brachycephaly: Short head. This is caused by closure of both Coronal suture.

Trigonocephaly: Triangular shaped skull. This is caused by early closure of metopic sutures.

CLINICAL PROBLEMS SEEN IN CRANIOSYNOSTOSIS
Difficulty in breathing
Speech abnormality
Abnormal facial appearance
Sight problem due to abnormalities of the optic formina.

TREATMENT
Treatment involves craniectomy
